The principal aim of the walk was to encourage other like-minded people to appreciate the scenery of the island.This developed into the idea that walkers could be sponsored to raise money for charity.Walk the Wight is the largest walk of the festival, and is always the last to occur.The 'Walk the Wight' event was first started in Spring 1991, when two members of staff from a company on the Island (Morey's which now sponsors the event) called Frank Stevens and Bill Bradley who enjoyed early morning walks arranged for a few friends and family members to walk from one side of the island to the other.The Isle of Wight Walking Festival is one of the UK’s longest running walking festivals.The festival was first set up by the Isle of Wight Council in 1999.In 2016 the Isle of Wight Council made the decision that it could no longer afford to run the festival.
The walk covers ground across the island, from Bembridge in the east, travelling via Carisbrooke to The Needles in the western tip of the island.

It takes place between May 3 and 18 and features over 250 walks, ranging from short strolls to round the Island events, including the famous speed dating walk and fossil-themed events.
As part of the sponsorship, Garmin will provide the latest GPS innovations to walkers including competitions, demonstrations and hands-on training on equipment.
